Chairwoman of Jakarta City Council's Commission D, Yuke Yurike said the Jakarta Governor, Pramono Anung, has shown serious concern about the potential for extreme weather ahead of Christmas and New Year.
Readiness must be thoroughly checked
Therefore, Commission D hopes that all levels of the Jakarta Provincial Government, especially the Jakarta Water Resources Agency, can continue to strengthen coordination and collaborate with other working partners.
According to Yuke, readiness needs to be checked thoroughly to anticipate potential flooding, starting from river flows, canals, to micro and macro channels, including the possibility of tidal flooding.
"Readiness must be thoroughly checked to anticipate flood control, starting from river flows, canals, to canals, both micro and macro. This also includes anticipating tidal flooding," she said, Monday (12/22).
Not only the high rainfall, Yuke also warned of the potential for tornadoes, which needs to be communicated to the public. Residents are urged to anticipate the risks by checking the condition of buildings and the surrounding environment.
"This anticipation is likely to last until January to February, so it is necessary to check embankments, water channels, and riverbank areas that are prone to landslides," she added.
Yuke continued that Commission D found a number of locations with eroded soil conditions, where residents' buildings were located very close to the river flow.
She appealed to urban villages and district heads to run mitigation efforts in their respective areas. If necessary, temporary filling can be carried out or warnings can be conveyed to residents living in vulnerable areas.
"Furthermore, all pump houses and equipment must be ensured to be functioning properly, including the readiness of staff and PJLP. This is the holiday season, it's necessary to allocate standby schedules to prevent pumps from being down due to a lack of staff," she explained.
She reminded all parties to continue monitoring and prepare optimally to prevent casualties or unwanted incidents, both towards the end of the year and the beginning of the coming year.
