Residents of RT 14/04, Semper Barat Urban Village, Cilincing Sub-district, North Jakarta, transformed hundreds of used plastic bottles and gallons into a unique monument that captures attention. This creation is a tangible step in reducing plastic waste in their community.

This has only been running for a month

RT 14/04 Chairman, Semper Barat Urban Village, Budi Utomo said, the monument with the inscription RT 014 standing on Jalan Remaja is made from plastic bottles filled with solid plastic waste, known as ecobricks.

"Initially, they only collected bottles and gallons that were no longer in use. Over time, it accumulated a lot, until finally the idea to utilize them into this monument arose," he expressed, Thursday (10/16).

He explained, the creation of a three-meter-high and 1.2-meter-wide monument involved several residents who care about cleanliness and environmental beauty. During the process, more than 300 plastic bottles were used.

"This has only been running for a month. We are also making other creations, such as replicas of swans and Ondel-ondel made from used gallons," he explained.

He added, the idea was inspired by social media. Hopefully, plastic waste will not only pile up and pollute the environment but also have useful value. Besides used bottles, residents also process organic waste into eco-enzyme, which is beneficial as liquid fertilizer for plants around the environment.

"I am grateful that the residents are very enthusiastic. This effort aligns with the North Jakarta City administration's program to manage waste from its source," he explained.

This monument creation received appreciation from Semper Barat Urban Village Head, Sukarmin.

Besides beautifying the area, he assessed, the monument made from recycled bottles also instills a sense of pride among the residents.

"Very good and very creative. In fact, this monument has become a favorite spot for residents to take selfies," he added.

He also invites residents in other areas to imitate the same spirit in turning waste into valuable items.

"Let's spread this spirit. Make our environment cleaner, greener, and more beautiful. I hope the idea from RT 14/04 can serve as an example for other RTs and RWs," he stated.
