Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno attended the Jakarta Film Week (JFW) press conference at CGV Cinema FX Sudirman on Jalan Jenderal Sudirman, Gelora, Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta yesterday.
Insya Allah (God willing), we're ready to support it
On this occasion, Rano reaffirmed the Jakarta Government's commitment to supporting the advancement of the film industry.
"Jakarta in 2027 will be 500 years old, and hopefully, Jakarta Film Week will improve its standards even more. Insya Allah (God willing), we're ready to support it," he expressed.
He went on to say that the efforts to improve the quality of this JFW are part of the plan to develop Jakarta as a film city. It is one of the measures to enhance the city's quality in line with the requirements to become a top global city.
He explained that based on the discussion with Governor Pramono, one of the requirements for a global city, which is the cultural aspect contributing 15 percent to the assessment, is through strengthening the film industry and making Jakarta a world cinema city.
Therefore, in May 2025, Jakarta participated by opening a booth at the Cannes Film Festival in France, to introduce Jakarta's film potential to the world.
He also admitted to sending a team to attend the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) in South Korea this September. All of this is part of strengthening the film industry and developing the concept of the Jakarta Film Commission as one of the supporting instruments.
"If we truly want to advance the film industry, there must be an institution called the Film Commission. Well, this is what we are currently exploring," he asserted.
Returning to JFW, Rano said that one of the categories, Jakarta Fund, features short films as a creative platform for young filmmakers.
For instance, world film industry figures like Steven Spielberg and George Lucas started from short film festivals at JFW.
"We never expected that there would be potential we didn't anticipate to emerge from a festival," he explained.
Jakarta Film Week Festival Director, Rina Damayanti, explained that this year is the fifth time the event has been held. The event is scheduled to take place from October 22 to 26 with the theme reignite.
This year, a total of 1,154 films from 99 countries registered to participate in JFW 2025. Besides being a hub of cinematic creativity, the existence of JFW aligns with the vision of a global city that provides opportunities for artists to create and experiment, with an internationally spotlighted platform.
Like the previous year, JFW 2025 will also include a film screening program. This year, the screenings is slated at CGV FX Sudirman, CGV Grand Indonesia, Taman Ismail Marzuki, Mercure Hotel Cikini, and Galeri Indonesia Karya.
"For the opening film, The Gox King, a collaboration between Malaysia and Indonesia. Then the closing film, Dopamin by Teddy Soeria Atmadja," he closed.
