The Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) in Jakarta is preparing a weather modification operation to reduce the risk of further flooding from August 17 to 21, 2025, following intense rainfall that hit the capital.
There is a potential for high rainfall in mid-August
This operation is part of collaboration with Jakarta BMKG, BNPB, Indonesian Air Force, and BPBD.
This aims to mitigate extreme hydrometeorological disasters and support the smooth running of all events in the Indonesia's 80th Independence Day celebration.
Jakarta BPBD Head, Isnawa Adji said, the weather modification operation is a form of proactive mitigation and anticipation by the local government.
He explained that the Jakarta Government hoped that this cross-sector collaboration could effectively mitigate the risks of extreme weather and ensure that all national agendas and community celebrations in the context of the Independence Day proceed with reverence, safety, and comfort.
"There is a potential for high rainfall in mid-August, therefore the weather modification operation will be conducted for five days, from August 17 to 21, 2025," he expressed, Tuesday (8/19).
Fahim, representative of BMKG Public Meteorology Directorate indicates that the MJO (Madden-Julian Oscillation) is active in Phase 2 (Western Indian Ocean), with potential low-frequency and Kelvin wave activity and negative OLR in West Java, which may serve as indicators of continued rainfall potential in some areas of Greater Jakarta.
"Generally, the Greater Jakarta area has humidity ranging from 40 to 100 percent at the 925 to 500 hPa layers. The atmospheric instability indicates weak unstable air mass conditions and moderate convection potential," he said.
