Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has affirmed that the provincial government is striving to manage the recent flooding that hit on Sunday, July 6, as effectively as possible. He explained that this flood event was caused by a combination of factors, such as high rainfall, upstream water flow, and tidal flooding along the northern coast.
"...flooding remains only in parts of East and West Jakarta,"
“This is a convergence of three types of flooding, namely upstream runoff, heavy rainfall, and coinciding tidal surges that raised sea levels,” Pramono stated during his visit to Bekasi Tengah Irrigation Canal in East Jakarta on Monday (7/7).
The flood handling faced challenges due to tidal flooding, which only began to recede around 10:30 PM on Sunday. As a result, the city's approximately 600 pumps could not operate at full capacity until the sea level subsided.
The high water volume also led to damage in 10 pump units. Efforts were made to minimize the flood's impact on strategic areas such as Bundaran Hotel Indonesia and Presidential Palace.
Pramono emphasized ongoing coordination with regional leaders to ensure prompt flood mitigation.
“Thankfully, when we look at Jakarta now,
flooding remains only in parts of East and West Jakarta . Most other areas have been effectively managed,” he noted. He has instructed his subordinates to remain vigilant based on the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency's (BMKG) forecast of continued rainfall and potential sea-level rise over the next two days.
“I have asked Mrs. Ika (Head of Water Resources Agency) and our team to stay on standby to address this,” he added.
According to him, flood handling is being conducted systematically through the Water Resources (SDA) Agency's command center, which monitors water levels citywide. However, he acknowledged that not all areas could be addressed immediately.
“For Cawang residents, I have read your messages on Instagram, and we apologize for not being able to satisfy everyone,” he expressed.
He hopes that with these efforts, flooding in areas like Sunter River and Kebon Pala would subside by midday.
Meanwhile, Head of Jakarta Water Resources (SDA) Agency, Ika Agustin Ningrum, reported that some pumps had malfunctioned due to overuse during the flood handling.
“This morning, several units are undergoing maintenance. We aim to have them all operational by this evening,” she stated.
Despite the challenges, she assured that mobile pumps remain operational and ready to provide backup support with capacities equal to stationary pumps.
Currently, the Jakarta Provincial Government operates 202 stationary pump locations with a total of 605 units. Additionally, 500 mobile pump units with capacities ranging from 250 to 500 liters per second have been deployed across the five administrative cities. Floating pumps are also available.
Ika added that the provincial government operates around 202 heavy equipment units for canal dredging, used throughout both rainy and dry seasons.
Meanwhile, East Jakarta Mayor Munjirin reported that around four neighborhood units (RWs) in Kebon Pala were affected by flooding. While some complaints were received, heavy equipment has already been deployed to the area to support optimal flood management.
"We will do our best today and going forward, in line with the governor’s direction," he affirmed.
