Jakarta Population and Civil Administration (Dukcapil) Agency continues to advance the population administration (adminduk) program by temporarily deactivating the National Identification Numbers (NIK) of residents who no longer reside at their registered addresses in Jakarta.

Jakarta Dukcapil Agency Head, Budi Awaluddin, informed that his side is currently focusing on verifying 38,000 NIKs identified as possibly belonging to residents no longer living in Jakarta. This verification is a part of quick win initiative aimed at organizing population data in the capital.

He noted that at the beginning of last year, the initial data indicated about 3 million NIKs requiring verification. However, the number has dropped to roughly 2.1 million, following processes such as self-reported relocations and natural causes like death.

"From that, we've identified about 100,000 records needing further verification, and now we're focusing on 38,000 for the initial structuring phase," said Budi on Tuesday (5/6).

He explained that this deactivation is temporary and aims to encourage residents to report their actual places of residence. Even though it is temporarily deactivated, the NIK can be reactivated once the moving process is officially carried out.

"Our goal isn't to permanently revoke NIKs but to raise awareness among residents to update their domicile information . Many have already updated their current, which is exactly what we hope for," he added.

He emphasized that population data is highly dynamic. Out of the 100,000 potentially inaccurate domicile records, 70,000 have been validated, while the other 38,000 remain under review and may be deactivated if not currently living in Jakarta.

According to him, there are various reasons why residents are reluctant to update their domicile, from renting out their houses in Jakarta, wanting to continue receiving public services in Jakarta, to the possibility of returning to live in Jakarta in the future.

"It could be that their house is rented out, but they live in another area. Or perhaps because public services in Jakarta are better, they don't want to change their address. Some may still be accessing education or healthcare services in Jakarta," he explained.

For information, this population data management effort is part of the Jakarta Provincial Government's initiatives to ensure the accuracy of resident data. Organized civil registration data is crucial for various public services, budget allocation, and data-driven policy formulation.

Previously, the city government had issued a warning to residents detected as not living at their registered addresses to update their data immediately. However, now, deactivation is being carried out more systematically, targeting residents who do not respond or fail to update their data independently.
