The Thousand Islands Regency plans to build 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) waste disposal sites (TPS) on several residential islands this year.

Thousand Islands Environment (LH) Sub-agency Head, Sujanto Budiroso mentioned, 3R TPS construction plan had gone through studies and verification involving experts. However, due to the pandemic, the construction was delayed and will be realized this year.

"We will be using lands as wide as 300-500 square meters to build waste disposal and its processing sites," he explained, Tuesday (2/1).

For the locations, his side would build 3R TPS near Tidung Island North Pier, on Sebira Island, Panggang Island, and Untung Jawa Island.

"With 3R TPS, we don't need to transport the waste to Bantar Gebang since we can process it on the islands. In a day, total waste in Thousand Islands can reach 20-22 tons if the west monsoon arrives carrying garbage," he stated.

He hoped that the construction plan could be realized to overcome waste problems.

"As an archipelago known as National Tourism Strategic Area (KSPN), Thousand Island must be clean and tidy thus tourists can feel comfortable and increase their visit to the islands," he said.
