The Jakarta Planetarium and Observatory will distribute 5,800 free sunglasses for anyone who want to see the partial solar eclipse in the morning on December 26.

One special sunglasses per person

"One special sunglasses per person," mentioned Jakarta Planetarium Performing Techniques and Publication Unit Head, Eko Wahyu Wibowo, Monday (12/2).

Those special sunglasses are equipped with ND5 filter that can dim the sun's light up to 100,000 times, considering this nature phenomenon cannot be seen directly because the strong rays of sun's light that can damage the eyes.

"Besides sunglasses, we also provide 10 ND5 binoculars. Visitors who don't get the sunglasses can ask for assistance from our astronomer to use the special binoculars," he mentioned.

He informed, on December 26, the sun, moon, and earth will be not perfectly in line. The moon position is approaching its farthest point with the earth, while the earth is approaching its closest point to the sun.

Because the moon's apparent diameter is smaller than the sun's, the moon can only blocking the center of the sun thus it causes the Sun's visible outer edges to look like a ring or annulus around the moon.

"In astronomy, this phenomena is called annular solar eclipse," he asserted.

According to him, Jakarta will be only able to see the partial solar eclipse, or previous stage of annular solar eclipse because Jakarta area is not bypassed by the main shadow (umbra).

"At 10:42 AM in Jakarta, the moon starts to move covering the sun, and its peak is at 12:36 PM where the sun will be covered around 72 percent by the moon and its light will be dimmed until 2:23 AM," he explained.

For information, this partial eclipse observation will be done at the Jakarta Planetarium and Observatory, Jalan Cikini Raya, Central Jakarta. This activity will also involve the astronomy communities in Jakarta.
