C40 Cities has announced the appointment of Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung as Vice Chair of the C40 Cities Steering Committee.

Reflects growing global recognition of Jakarta's role

C40 Cities is a global network of nearly 100 major cities committed to tackling the climate crisis through collaboration, knowledge-sharing, policy innovation, and the acceleration of impactful climate solutions.

Member cities of C40 represent more than 700 million people worldwide and around a quarter of the global economy, making the organization one of the world's most influential platforms for urban climate action.

Jakarta Secretariat Regional Cooperation Bureau Head, Marulina Dewi, said the appointment further strengthens Jakarta's strategic role as a leading city in East, Southeast Asia, and Oceania (ESEAO) in advancing ambitious urban climate solutions and setting an example for rapidly growing megacities.

She noted that Jakarta is steadily moving toward a more sustainable and resilient future under Governor Pramono Anung's leadership by balancing the demands of a major metropolitan economy with concrete measures to address environmental challenges.

"The trust given to Governor Pramono Anung as Vice Chair of the C40 Cities Steering Committee reflects growing global recognition of Jakarta's role as a city actively advancing climate solutions, sustainable development, and city diplomacy on the international stage," she said on Monday (5/18).

According to her, the appointment also reflects the Jakarta Regional Cooperation Bureau's efforts to strengthen global strategic partnerships and expand Jakarta's engagement on the international stage.

"This momentum further strengthens Jakarta's position as an important partner in the global city network to build a more resilient, inclusive, and equitable urban future," she emphasized.

Jakarta is currently advancing several key initiatives, including:

• Integrated green mobility: Accelerating the electrification of the Transjakarta fleet while improving rail transport integration to cut emissions and ease traffic congestion.

• Climate adaptation and flood resilience: Strengthening coastal protection and revitalizing urban water management systems to improve resilience against sea level rise and extreme weather.

• Just energy transition: Expanding the use of renewable energy in public infrastructure and developing a green economy that creates sustainable jobs for residents.

Several strategic benefits for the Jakarta Provincial Government from the appointment include:

1. Strengthening Jakarta's role in global city diplomacy by expanding access to best practices, technical support, and international funding opportunities to accelerate local climate programs.

2. Increasing Jakarta's attractiveness for green investment, particularly in sustainable transportation, renewable energy, and climate-resilient infrastructure sectors.

3. Allowing Jakarta to help shape global agendas and standards through its direct involvement in the Steering Committee, while ensuring the perspectives of developing cities — including rapid urbanization and inclusivity challenges — are reflected in international climate policies.

As Vice Chair of the Steering Committee, Governor Pramono Anung will represent the ESEAO region at the global level. He will work alongside governors and mayors from cities around the world to accelerate inclusive climate action and promote sustainable, resilient, and equitable urban development.
