The Jakarta administration has initiated Weather Modification Operations (WMO) to disperse rain clouds and mitigate the impact of extreme weather.
We have urged them (BMKG) not to focus solely on Jakarta
However, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung noted that effective flood control in the capital depends heavily on conditions in surrounding areas.
Consequently, he has urged the BMKG to extend cloud-seeding efforts to neighboring buffer zones rather than focusing solely on Jakarta’s airspace.
"We have urged them (BMKG) not to focus solely on Jakarta, but to also conduct weather modification in neighboring areas like Tangerang, Bekasi, Bogor, and Depok. Currently, Jakarta is concentrating on its own territory, while the BMKG handles the surrounding regions," he stated, at the Pullman Hotel, West Jakarta, Thursday (1/22).
He explained that intensive monitoring of rainfall patterns has been ongoing since dawn. In collaboration with the Central Government and BMKG, the Jakarta administration has conducted two cloud-seeding sessions.
This effort is expected to dampen the intensity of heavy rain forecast to last for eight hours.
"Without this intervention, the rain would have certainly persisted, but we have been executing weather modification since 7:30 AM," he said.
