Jakarta City Council Commission A Member, Manuara Siahaan asserts that the Jakarta government’s Weather Modification Operation (OMC) is the right call given the current bout of extreme weather.

Citing BMKG data, he noted that air humidity, rainfall, and wind speeds are currently off the charts. In such an environment, Siahaan believes OMC is the most viable path forward to nip flood risks in the bud and protect the capital.

"Weather modification is our best bet at the moment. While Mother Nature holds the reins, we have the tools and the smarts to dampen the blow, especially given how much is at stake for Jakarta," he expressed, Tuesday (1/20).

However, he pointed out that timing is everything and must be rooted in science. Manuara expressed his hope that the BPBD has done its homework by thoroughly analyzing rainfall patterns and curves before pulling the trigger on the operation.

"Timing isn't just a guess; it's a science. I’m confident the technical team has checked all the boxes before moving forward. However, since this isn't small change, we must ensure it's only used as a last resort," he added.

He noted that the harsh weather since year-end has left the city with no time to lose, making this operation a vital step to nip flood threats in the bud.

Further, he lauded the joint effort with the TNI AU as a model of inter-agency synergy. He believes that this all-hands-on-deck approach ensures the operation is both cost-effective and high-impact.

"Integrating cutting-edge radar technology with BMKG’s climate intel allows the team to stay on target. The Air Force's involvement is spot on, ensuring that cloud seeding is executed with surgical precision," Siahaan stated.
