Jakarta City Council Commission B Member, Wa Ode Harlona has welcomed Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung’s decision to ban fireworks displays for the New Year 2026 celebrations.
We in the legislature highly appreciate the Governor’s move
She regards the policy as a fitting step that reflects national solidarity amid the grief caused by natural disasters striking several regions in Sumatra.
"We in the legislature highly appreciate the Governor’s move. As a national barometer, Jakarta must exhibit empathy and avoid excess while other regions are in mourning," she stated, Tuesday (12/23).
According to her, the prohibition, she asserted, transcends simple regulation; it serves as an ethical reminder to stand in solidarity with those in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra as they rebuild after recent disasters.
Beyond the aspect of empathy, she also highlighted budget efficiency and the positive impact on public order. By centralizing celebrations at one or two locations, the potential for uncontrolled crowds and the accumulation of post-event waste can be minimized.
Wa Ode hoped that residents are encouraged to find deeper meaning in the New Year transition through purposeful activities.
"Joint prayer within our own homes and neighborhoods is a much more significant way to usher in the new year. Further, we're committed to overseeing this directive, ensuring that hotels and tourist attractions join us in this spirit of modesty and solidarity," she stated.
