Jakarta’s Satpol PP has enlisted the help of private security teams in the city’s business district to keep sidewalks clear of obstructions. The partnership, centered in the Sudirman-Thamrin area, aims to tackle persistent issues like illegal parking and street vendors on a daily basis, rather than just during weekend events.
This partnership is a tangible step in fostering public order
Satpol PP Chief, Satriadi Gunawan noted that security guards are 'strategic partners' in maintaining urban order. By intervening early, they can prevent motorcycle taxis (onjol) and vendors from encroaching on pedestrian space.
"Our priority is to safeguard the function of sidewalks as a secure environment for pedestrians," he expressed.
Gunawan also stressed that maintaining a tidy city is a collective effort, calling on building security and the private sector to take ownership of their local environments.
As part of a strengthened coordination strategy, Satpol PP has integrated building security into a real-time WhatsApp coordination group.
"We expect them (security officer) to lead routine monitoring in their respective areas and employ persuasive measures. If they detect potential disturbances to public order, they can now report and coordinate with us immediately," he added.
Jakarta Satpol PP Secretary, Santoso explained, this setup ensures building security has a direct line to report any sidewalk violations near their respective buildings. The integrated mechanism aims to boost Satpol PP's efficiency, making Sudirman-Thamrin a model for urban order in Jakarta’s business hub.
“This partnership is a tangible step in fostering public order through collective action and consistent coordination between Satpol PP and building security,” he concluded.
In a recent security operation, 20 Satpol PP personnel managed to deter five street vendors from encroaching on Jalan Sudirman during yesterday’s Car Free Day.
Beyond enforcement, the operation focused on joint patrols along the Sudirman-Thamrin area and proactive engagement with building security officers. To ensure a rapid response to infractions, officers also distributed hotlines for Satpol PP duty personnel to building management teams.
