Jakarta City Council's Commission C Member, Josephine Simanjuntak assessed that the Blok M area has great potential as a healthy gathering space for young people.

place for young people to communicate, discuss and socialize

She also supports the Jakarta Provincial Government's plan to replicate the concept of regional development in various other locations in Jakarta.

"Blok M has great potential as a place for young people to communicate, discuss and socialize," she said, Tuesday (11/25).

According to her, the existence of gathering spaces like Blok M is crucial for youth empowerment. Safe and inclusive spaces are considered capable of building solidarity, strengthening relationships, and preventing potential conflict.

She gave an example of the phenomenon of gathering spaces that grew naturally in fast food restaurants which often became hangouts for the young generation in the capital.

"They buy ice cream but can hang out for hours. The important thing is that there's a meeting place and free Wi-Fi. The younger generation today really needs spaces like that to study, do assignments, or just hang out with friends," she added.

She continued Josephine is pushing for a similar concept to be implemented in various parks, particularly in East Jakarta. Currently, she sees many hangout spaces being primarily accessible to the middle class, making it difficult for children from grassroots families to enjoy them.

"They end up hanging out on the side of a flyover, on an overpass, drinking coffee. From there, jealousy, competition, and even brawls emerge. That's something I can't tolerate," she continued.

She said that gathering spaces don't have to be located in shopping malls. City parks can actually be inclusive and accessible public spaces.

With facilities such as free Wi-Fi, parks can be safe, comfortable, and productive places for young people.

"With the right layout, a park can be a place for young people to learn, parents to enjoy the scenery, and elementary school students to explore. The important thing is to have a clear concept," she stated.
