Jakarta solidified its position at the top of the provisional standings of the Jakarta National Student Sports Week (Popnas) XVII.

Potential to deliver additional gold medals

Based on data up to Thursday (11/6) at 11 PM, the Jakarta contingent has collected 61 gold medals, far ahead of Central Java in second place with 33 gold medals, and East Java with 29 gold medals in third place.

With a very significant margin, Jakarta demonstrates dominance in almost all the sports disciplines contested.

Jakarta Youth and Sports Agency Head, Andri Yansyah said, the number of gold medals won by Jakarta still has the potential to increase. Several sports still have many events remaining, so the opportunity to widen the gap with competitors is becoming even greater.

"Some sports such as judo and swimming are still in the competition heading to the final round, along with other sports that also have the potential to deliver additional gold medals," he expressed, Friday (11/7).

Seeing this development, he believes that Jakarta is not only capable of reaching the target but also surpassing it. The initial target set was to win 80 gold medals at POPNAS XVII.

He added, his confidence was strengthened by the solid readiness of the athletes and the momentum as the host country that could boost their motivation to compete.

"With performance continuously improving, we can at least match or even surpass the gold medal count at POPNAS 2023 in Palembang," stated.
