The Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) conducts Weather Modification Operations (WMO) to anticipate potential extreme weather and hydrometeorological disasters in Jakarta.
OMC is an anticipatory step
This operation will take place from November 5 to 10, 2025, centered at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in East Jakarta, in cooperation with BMKG and the Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU).
Jakarta BPBD Acting Head, Isnawa Adji explained, this is a follow-up to the BMKG analysis predicting increased rainfall in most of Jakarta and its surrounding areas.
"This OMC is an anticipatory step by the Jakarta government to reduce the potential for extreme rainfall that could cause flooding, inundation, and landslides. This inter-agency collaboration is part of the mitigation strategy ahead of the peak rainy season," he expressed, Thursday (11/6).
The operation is conducted using a Casa A-2114 aircraft belonging to the Indonesian Air Force, with two flights each day at 11:30 AM and 2:30 PM, led by Second Lieutenant Pnb Bintang, Capt. Pnb Fajar, and First Lt. Pnb Krisna.
The cloud seeding location covers the Pandeglang area, the southwest waters of Pandeglang, and the western waters of Serang Regency, with a flight altitude of 8,000–10,000 feet. The total hygroscopic seed material (salt/NaCl) used amounts to 1,600 kilograms.
Observation results show the formation of Stratocumulus clouds in Lebak to the western coast of Banten. In that area, Cumulus clouds are also beginning to grow, seeded intensively up to an altitude of 10,000 feet.
The team recorded light precipitation in the western part of Pandeglang, indicating that the seed material successfully triggered rain cloud growth in the target area.
He addes, OMC will keep adjusting based on the daily atmospheric conditions monitored by BMKG to maintain operational effectiveness.
"We regularly monitor to ensure that rainfall is not concentrated on the land of Jakarta, but dispersed in the surrounding waters. In this way, the flood risk can be reduced," he explained.
The Jakarta BPBD also urges the community to remain vigilant for the potential of heavy rain accompanied by strong winds, and to ensure that water channels and drains are kept clean.
Residents can monitor weather information and early warnings through the Siaga 112 channel, the website bpbd.jakarta.go.id, and social media @bpbddkijakarta.
