Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung, together with the Minister of Investment and Downstreaming/Head of BKPM, Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, visited Kota Tua in West Jakarta to assess the readiness for reactivation and redevelopment of the historic area using a Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) concept.
"...revitalization of Kota Tua must be implemented in a structured and sustainable way,"
Pramono emphasized that the Jakarta Provincial Government and the central government would strengthen coordination to accelerate the revitalization of Kota Tua, aiming to transform it into a flagship tourist destination that integrates culture, arts, and creative economy.
"We believe that
revitalization of Kota Tua must be implemented in a structured and sustainable way, through close collaboration between the central government and the Jakarta Provincial Government," said Pramono in an official press release issued on Monday (10/20).As a follow-up, the Jakarta Provincial Government and the central government have established a task force composed of representatives from the central government, Jakarta government, BUMN, BUMD, and the private sector. This task force is responsible for clearly defining roles and responsibilities throughout the reactivation process, from basic infrastructure development to the enhancement of economic and social functions.
"This task force will map out, in detail, the responsibilities of each party, whether from the Jakarta government, central government, or potential private sector involvement," Pramono mentioned.
At the beginning of 2026, the Jakarta Provincial Government will prioritize improving basic infrastructure, including roads, waterways, and pedestrian pathways. This foundational work is considered essential before progressing to the subsequent phases of development and spatial planning.
Additionally, Pramono announced plans to relocate the Jakarta Institute of Arts (IKJ) to Kota Tua, which is expected to enhance Kota Tua's identity as a vibrant and inclusive center for arts, culture, and the creative economy.
However, he added, the relocation of IKJ will only proceed once supporting infrastructure in the area is ready, including the completion of MRT Phase II from Bundaran HI to Kota.
"Heritage areas like this need a strong presence of artistic talent and creativity. Our vision is to make Kota Tua a space for artistic expression, while also strengthening its character as a cultural heritage site of higher value," he asserted.
Governor Pramono is targeting full readiness of Kota Tua for two important moments: Jakarta's 500th anniversary in 2027 and the completion of MRT line to Kota Tua by 2029.
"By 2027, above-ground development is expected to be completed, followed by a focus on underground construction. With MRT operational in 2029, Kota Tua will be ready to become a new hub in Jakarta that attracts tourists from around the world," he shared.
Minister of Investment and Downstreaming/Head of BKPM, Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, expressed appreciation for the swift action taken by the Jakarta Provincial Government and affirmed the central government's full support.
"We truly appreciate Governor Pramono Anung's initiative to revive Kota Tua as a new icon of Jakarta. Many buildings in this area are owned by BUMNs like Bank Mandiri, PT Pos, and PT KAI, so cross-sector coordination is essential,” he conveyed.
He added that the central government will immediately coordinate with BUMNs that own assets in the area to ensure proper conservation and revitalization of the buildings in accordance with heritage preservation regulations. Rosan emphasized that the project requires strong synergy and collective commitment from multiple stakeholders.
"We are committed to revitalizing this area without diminishing its heritage value. This is a collective effort that demands close collaboration between government, businesses, academia, and creative economy players. With strong cooperation, I believe this plan can be successfully realized," he stated.
