Jakarta Provincial Government keeps innovating to handle air quality. In addition to increase green areas and implement a number of supporting programs, regulations regarding the Early Warning System (EWS) are also being continuously refined.

People can be more alert

Head of Jakarta Environmental Agency, Asep Kuswanto said this EWS will provide information to the public about air quality for the next three days.

"People can be more alert and take precautions before doing their activities," Asep said, Thursday (9/25).

According to him, Jakarta is one of five cities in Indonesia that has the reputation of unhealthy air quality.

Based on the study run by his team, the biggest factors triggering poor air quality in Jakarta are the transportation and industrial sectors.

Therefore, the Jakarta Provincial Government is encouraging the use of public transportation and conducting vehicle emission tests to reduce air pollution.

Meanwhile, Deputy Governor Rano Karno hopes the implementation of Car Free Day in five administration areas will also contribute in improving air quality.

"I hope the Car Free Day is not only implemented in Thamrin, but also in other areas," Rano stated.

Rano also admitted to continuing his efforts to develop city parks. He acknowledged that although regulations mandate 30 percent of Jakarta's total green open space, the current number is only around five percent.

"It's not as easy we thought. Extra effort is needed here," Rano admitted.
