The Jakarta Provincial Government is committed to positioning Jakarta among the world's top 50 global cities. The goal is pursued by accelerated innovation in three key areas, namely transportation, infrastructure, and digital services.
"Government digital network is a key factor if Jakarta wants to level up,"
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung conveyed this commitment while opening a seminar and discussion forum titled 'Advancing Jakarta into the Top 50 Global Cities Through Accelerated Infrastructure and Digital Service Innovation' at Balai Agung, Jakarta City Hall, on Tuesday (8/5).
"The first key to becoming one of the top 50 global cities is improving mobility and transportation," he asserted.
Pramono emphasized that improving transportation and mobility is the key factor in raising Jakarta's global standing. He also praised the Transportation Agency for opening new Transjabodetabek routes, including Alam Sutera-Blok M, PIK 2-Blok M, and Bogor-Blok M.
According to him, these new routes have helped ease congestion in the city. He even noted that Jakarta is no longer ranked among the top 10 most congested cities in the world, while New York, a global city, still holds the second spot.
"Apparently, congestion is no longer a defining metric for a global city's ranking," he added.
Moreover, the Jakarta Provincial Government will also optimize its existing infrastructure, including assets and physical facilities, which have not yet been fully utilized.
"For example, those managed by Jakpro, such as the Velodrome, JIS, TIM, and others. Our main issue is that these infrastructures haven't been optimized," he mentioned.
He cited the city's efforts to revive the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS), which recently attracted significant attention. With better transport access and strong collaboration, JIS is now seeing rise in visitors.
Pramono also pushed for enhancing digital accessibility and infrastructure in Jakarta, emphasizing that a government digital network is essential for city's transformation into a top 50 global city.
"Government digital network is a key factor if Jakarta wants to level up, particularly in terms of digital infrastructure," he said.
He cited New York as an example, which offers many public spaces with easy accessibility and is equipped with wireless network. Therefore, Pramono encouraged Jakarta to also provide wireless access in public spaces and strengthen its fiber optic network.
"We also need to start recognizing that this will become a key element of Jakarta's development through a government digital network," he mentioned.
On the other hand, President Director of PT Jakarta Propertindo (Jakpro) Iwan Takwin said the event was the result of discussion between Jakpro and related stakeholders to support Jakarta's goal to become one of the top 50 global city.
Jakpro, through its subsidiary, PT Jakarta Infrastructure Propertindo (JIP), is fully committed to supporting this agenda by developing sustainable digital infrastructure. This includes developing and managing secure integrated data centers, as well as providing fiber optic backbone and wireless access point in strategic public spaces.
"Jakpro is actively taking part in developing Jakarta's digital infrastructure," he stated.
In addition, Jakpro is contributing to the development of digital smart building area aligned with green and sustainability development priciples.
According to him, BUMD must be increasingly proactive in supporting digital transformation and strategic infrastructure as key requirements for Jakarta to become a global city.
"This role not only supports the Jakarta Provincial Government's public services, but also as part in a collective effort to improve Jakarta's ranking in global civic index, especially in information exchange indicator," he explained.
Iwan underlined that strong synergy between the government, BUMDs, private sector, and citizens is essential for Jakarta's digital transformation.
"We are ready to be part of the solution and will continue to collaborate with all stakeholders," he stated.
