Jakarta Governor, Pramono Anung, wants the ondel-ondel puppet dance art to receive appreciation from all parties rather than being used as a tool for begging.

"I really hope that ondel-ondel is a dynamic culture, not a static one. But, it also needs to receive adequate appreciation and recognition," he expressed, at Borobudur Hotel, Central Jakarta, Wednesday (5/28).

He emphasized that the ondel-ondel art must be well maintained and become part of the main culture of Betawi. Hence, he asked his team to assist 42 Betawi art studios in Jakarta to continue creating.

"Please don't use ondel-ondel as a tool for busking, it should be taken care of properly," he asserted.

He asserted the role of the government is very important in helping to meet the needs of artists to perform in various public spaces and events.

"Later, we will invite the ondel-ondel for various events in the capital, there are so many events," he added.

He emphasized his commitment to preserving and making Betawi culture the main identity of Jakarta as a global city.

This is following the provisions of Law Number 2/2024 which states that Jakarta will become a global city and will promote Betawi culture as its main culture.
