Jakarta DPRD Commission B Member, Francine Eustacia emphasizes the importance of joint efforts to reduce the use of plastic packaging. This step is deemed to be able to contribute to reducing the large amount of plastic waste that is still a problem in Jakarta.
She admitted that she has started to reduce the use of plastic packaging such as beverage bottles. Even, in every work visit, she has started to switch to using refillable drinking water and also tumblers for shared consumption.
"One example of what I do during recess activities is not using plastic drinking bottles. I use refillable gallon drinking water," she explained, at City Council Building, Friday (11/8).
Such a move could help reduce the consumption of up to 3,300 plastic bottles during work visit activities. Besides drinks, she also reduced the use of plastic packaging for food and replaced it with banana leaf wrapping.
She hoped that her efforts to reduce plastic waste could be an example for other council members and the community.
"Hopefully, it will also be a serious concern for all of us," she hoped.
According to her, her real actions were much more important and could be an example for others than just giving advice. Therefore, she urged the government to not only provide education regarding the importance of reducing plastic waste but also to implement it starting from ourselves.
"It's useless if we urge residents to manage and sort waste, but we don't set an example," she explained.
To overcome the waste problem in Jakarta, a massive movement was needed that had to be carried out together. Public awareness of the importance of reducing the use of plastic packaging also needs to be increased again.
"So, this needs hard work and cooperation," he uttered.
