The Jakarta Culture Agency has designated 4 historic buildings in Jakarta as Cultural Conservation Buildings (BCB).

The Jakarta Government commits to consistently determine historical buildings as BCB to preserve historic buildings

Jakarta Culture Agency Head Iwan Henry Wardhana stated it was done to preserve historical buildings for good and controlled management and maintenance.

"The Jakarta Government commits to consistently determine historical buildings as BCB to preserve historic buildings following what is mandated by the law. Therefore, BCB can be managed properly and get more controlled maintenance," he said, in Kuningan Timur, South Jakarta as quoted from Jakarta PPID's Press Release, Friday (8/4).

It was carried out by Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan on Tuesday, March 15, 2022. Buildings that had been designated as BCB were the former Sin Tek Bio Vihara, Tio Tek Hong Store, Kompak Store Building, and Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology building.

"The determination of Cultural Conservation Building (BCB) is expected to have a positive impact on historic buildings in Jakarta and people can be more concerned about preserving the building," he mentioned.

For information, Sin Tek Bio Vihara which is located in Pasar Baru had been designated as BCB according to Governor's Decree No. 238/2022. The vihara was estimated to have existed since 1698 and became a part of Pasar Baru's historical development.

Its existence was built as a reflection of the diversity of the people who lived in Pasar Baru at that time.

Furthermore, the former Tio Tek Hong store in Central Jakarta which was designated as BCB according to Governor's Decree No. 239/2022 was estimated to have existed since 1900 as the first local recording company that had an important role, especially in Pasar Baru area.

The Kompak Store building in Pasar Baru was also designated as BCB according to Governor's Decree No. 240/2022. In past, this South Chinese architectural style building was built in the 19th century as the house of the 4th Majoor de Chinezeen of Batavia.

Through Governor's Decree No. 241/2022, the Governor had also designated the Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology building as BCB since it was also a part of the cultural landscape of Jakarta.

From 1911 to 1914, the building had Nieuwe Kunst-style architecture that played an important role in scientific research on tropical diseases. It was believed to be a silent witness to the development of science in Indonesia as the world's leading center for tropical medicine research at that time.
