The Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) has developed flood mitigation plans for the upcoming peak of the rainy season. These preparations include worst-case scenarios, such as establishing evacuation sites for residents in the event of prolonged heavy rainfall, compounded by water flowing down from upstream and high tide conditions.
Jakarta BPBD's Head of the Operational Implementation Unit, Marulitua Sijabat, stated that the peak of the rainy season is expected to occur in February 2027. As a mitigation measure, the Jakarta Provincial Government has coordinated with relevant agencies, including the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the National Police, and the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
We have prepared 403 evacuation sites
"Cross-sectoral coordination among local government agencies has been carried out in anticipation of disaster situations during the peak of the rainy season," he said, Saturday (11/7).
Maruli explained that his side estimates that the peak of this rainy season will occur in February 2027. It is predicted that rainfall will be very high and tend to be extreme for a long period, potentially triggering inundation and flooding.
Based on mapping conducted by his staff, 200 neighborhood units (RW) across Jakarta are classified as prone to inundation and flooding. These locations are spread across several areas prone to inundation, such as Cawang, Cililitan, Kampung Melayu, and Rawa Buaya.
To anticipate and minimize potential disasters, Maruli stated that Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has ordered all levels of government to implement mitigation measures, including socialization and improvements to water resources infrastructure and draining drainage channels. District and urban village heads have also been instructed to assist with drainage cleaning and clean-ups in their respective areas.
Furthermore, all disaster management infrastructure, such as rubber boats, evacuation tents, mobile toilets, lighting, and a fully equipped command post tent, has been prepared. The disaster early warning system (EWS) has also been activated to notify residents, in addition to SMS blasts and digital TV, after receiving information from the BMKG regarding extreme weather that could potentially trigger a disaster.
Various supporting equipment will be immediately prepared to approach the location upon receiving information about potential disasters before flooding occurs. Furthermore, Maruli emphasized that joint personnel will also be immediately deployed to vulnerable locations upon early warning.
"We have prepared 403 evacuation sites. Coordination regarding technical and operational aspects in the field has also been carried out," he stated.
