Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung officially opened a boxing sports facility along with the Kampung Melayu Jaga Jakarta post under the Kampung Melayu Flyover, East Jakarta, Friday (11/6). The venue marks the city’s second under-flyover boxing ring, following an earlier facility established beneath the Pasar Rebo Flyover.
The boxing facility was introduced to suppress recurrent brawls involving students and local residents across East Jakarta. Pramono noted, over 130 brawling incidents were documented in the area throughout 2025 alone.
We have witnessed an extraordinary reduction (in brawls) in East Jakarta
Yet, since the public area was repurposed for boxing practice and community sports, the number of brawls has plummeted to approximately 20 cases in 2026.
“Through late October, because this venue has been used for football games and boxing practice, alongside the one I previously opened in Pasar Rebo, we have witnessed an extraordinary reduction (in brawls) in East Jakarta, especially right here. The figure dropped from 132 to roughly 20-odd cases,” he expressed.
He emphasized that such sports venues provide local youth with a productive outlet. As a result, he aims to replicate the provision of these facilities in other parts of the capital.
Physical work on the Kampung Melayu boxing ring took place between August 20 and October 23, 2026, in partnership with municipal water operator PAM Jaya.
Besides the East Jakarta site, PAM Jaya was asked to assist in transforming under-flyover areas in North Jakarta into much-needed public sports facilities.
“Look for similar flyovers and transform them into venues—whether for skateboarding, boxing, or playing football—so that the energy of young people in Jakarta is well directed,” he explained.
Beyond the boxing facility, revitalization efforts also reshaped a former temporary waste disposal site into the Jaga Jakarta community post. The repurposing was made possible by a significant reduction in local waste output.
He expressed appreciation for the community's cooperation in executing Gubernatorial Instruction No. 5/2026 on Waste Sorting, noting that the policy has proven successful in resolving local waste management challenges.
“This serves as a great model of practical grassroots action—demonstrating how we can suppress street brawls, resolve waste issues, and safeguard public safety in Jakarta,” he stated.
