Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung inspected the normalization progress along the Poncol segment of the Mampang River in Kuningan Barat, South Jakarta on Thursday (10/29).

This normalization aims to mitigate persistent flood risks that frequently submerge the area during heavy downpours.

The volume will be significantly reduced

He explained that Poncol remains one of the city's primary flood hotspots whenever rainfall reaches 100 millimeters per day. The Jakarta government is capitalizing on the dry season to overhaul critical flood zones, executing projects that range from constructing an embung (artificial lake) to engineering the Mampang-Krukut river confluence.

"While I am realistic that some flooding will still occur, the volume will be significantly reduced because we are addressing the issue with total seriousness," he explained.

He explained that normalization and dredging operations are also underway across other key channels, including Ciliwung, Krukut, and Cakung Lama rivers. These coordinated efforts form a critical line of defense ahead of the monsoon season, which is projected to begin in late November.

He added that flood mitigation is being driven by strong collaboration between Jakarta Water Resources (SDA) Agency and Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD). River normalization efforts, which had stalled for years, are now aggressively back on track to boost water conveyance capacity and minimize flood impacts on residents.

"Normalization efforts that lay idle for so long are now fully reactivated. We are executing dredging operations everywhere—across all ditches, drains, and rivers," he explained.

During the inspection, Pramono expressed his gratitude to local residents who permitted their land to be used for storing dredged river materials, ensuring the smooth execution of flood mitigation works.

In the future, the Jakarta government is coordinating with the legislative to undertake a comprehensive overhaul of the Poncol area. This revitalization goes beyond flood control to encompass residential improvements and road infrastructure upgrades.

"We're taking direct action. As planned before, our approach goes beyond mere flood mitigation—it integrates housing improvements, road infrastructure upgrades, and comprehensive flood management into one unified strategy," he stated.
