The Jakarta government is taking proactive measures to tackle potential scorching weather ahead of two major international events: the Jakarta Running Festival (JRF) and Kanye West’s concert, both set for October 24–25.

To keep extreme heat at bay, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung is joining forces with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and the local Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) to launch weather modification operations ahead of the big weekend.

I’ve ordered the Disaster Mitigation Agency to carry out cloud seeding

"I’ve ordered them (BPBD) to carry out cloud seeding on October 22 and 23," Pramono announced at Jakarta City Hall, Wednesday (10/21).

He explained that the cloud seeding operation aims to cool down city temperatures just in time for the two major events, adding that successful rainmaking will depend on sufficient cloud cover.

"Honestly, if we could do it today, we’d start today. Hopefully, Jakarta cools down well before the Jakarta Running Festival kicks off. Let’s hope the cloud conditions play along," he explained.

It is set to create a comfortable environment for marathon participants, music fans, and the general public during the big weekend.

"One thing is clear: up until the 25th, I’ve ordered that if we can help trigger rainfall, we’re going to make it rain," he stated.
