Brawl between rival youth groups broke out again near Manggarai Station in South Jakarta on Sunday (10/18).
"The police, army, and Jakarta local government have agreed with youth representatives to set up a joint security post, and I have given my approval," Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung asserted in Cipayung, East Jakarta, Monday (10/19).
It started with two groups provoking each other
The joint post is set up to curb frequent youth clashes in the neighborhood.
Pramono noted that the brawl was sparked when two rival groups provoked one another with fireworks, leading to a fire at a local kiosk.
"It started with two groups provoking each other and launching fireworks, which quickly escalated into a full-blown brawl," he explained.
When the brawl erupted, he immediately contacted law enforcement officials to crack down on those involved. Authority has since taken six suspected provocateurs into custody.
"By last night, six individuals were apprehended for inciting the clash and engaging in extreme acts of violence," Pram explained.
Earlier, the Jakarta government leveraged Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding to install public amenities in Manggarai to help deter youth violence.
"Following my visit there, local youths asked for public sports facilities, which we provided through CSR funding. Yet despite these efforts, clashes still persist," he closed.
