Jakarta is teaming up with South Korea to harness AI for urban renewal in Tanah Abang, Governor Pramono Anung confirmed on Thursday (10/8).

Speaking after the Shaping the Future Together: Strategic AI Partnership Between Korea and Indonesia roundtable at Ayana MidPlaza, Thursday (10/8), Pramono assured that the 2.3-kilometer project will revitalize the area with zero evictions.

The plans are being discussed and refined right now

"Hence, there is a 2.3-kilometer area across Kampung Bali, Kebon Melati, and Kebon Kacang in Tanah Abang where we will apply an AI-driven approach to renovate and revitalize the neighborhood without carrying out any evictions,” he expressed.

Pramono hopes the AI initiative will become a model for future urban development that boosts residents' quality of life, adding that details are being finalized.

“The plans are being discussed and refined right now. Hopefully, this proves how AI can solve Jakarta’s urban slum problems,” he explained.

Pramono said AI will help design neighborhood layouts, map zero-eviction renewal plans, and power smart CCTV networks.

Revamping Tanah Abang is crucial due to its central location. He reaffirmed that no evictions will take place throughout the project, with completion expected in 2028.

“We are using AI to revitalize the community with zero evictions, and we hope that by 2028, this area will become far more vibrant and visually appealing,” he explained.

Jakarta already enjoys fruitful sister-city relationships with several South Korean regions, including Seoul, Jeju, Chungcheongnam-do, and Nonsan.

South Korean Ambassador Yoon Soon-gu reiterated his country's commitment to boosting Indonesia’s AI ecosystem and expanding tech ties with Jakarta.

“We're a reliable partner for Indonesia in every field, including AI. With our strong technological foundation, we stand ready to work closely with Indonesia,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Senior Advisor to the Indonesia 2045 Laboratory (LAB 45), Andi Widjajanto, said his think tank is currently exploring a strategic partnership with the South Korean Embassy in the Artificial Intelligence sector.

“Our hope is that future AI collaboration will truly be citizen-centric—focusing on the people, the broader population, and especially the younger generation ahead,” he closed.
