The East Jakarta administration has removed over 3,100 meters of tangled, disused overhead cables along Jalan Haji Naman in Duren Sawit to improve urban safety and aesthetics.

Governor on Urban Development Advisor Nirwono Yoga lauded East Jakarta’s bold move to cut down thousands of meters of abandoned aerial wiring across the district.

It’s all about restoring the beauty and charm of our city

"It’s all about restoring the beauty and charm of our city. Over the next five years, the Jakarta government is determined to bury all dangling wires for good through our Integrated Utility Tunnel network," he expressed, Monday (10/5).

According to him, relocating overhead cables underground delivers multiple advantages, ranging from enhancing public safety and pedestrian comfort to improving traffic flow.

"Ridding our streets of dangling cables will elevate Jakarta's urban aesthetics and strongly support our ambition to rise in the global city rankings," he added.

East Jakarta Deputy Mayor Kusmanto revealed that operations to clear out dangling utility lines will now run on a dedicated weekly basis, taking direct aim at the stubborn web of dead wires that still blights city streets.

The push is part of a broader mission to untangle the capital—building a safer, more pedestrian-friendly, and visually appealing urban environment for everyone.

"This is the kind of tangible action the public expects to see. It serves as clear evidence that the Jakarta government is standing firm on its commitments," he explained.

According to Benhard Hutajulu, Head of East Jakarta Bina Marga Sub-agency, the operation removed 3,115 meters of disused aerial cables in a single sweep.

He added that the lines were traced to 14 internet and network providers under the Indonesian Telecommunications Network Providers Association (Apjatel).

"Our target is to complete the entire overhead cable cleanup here in about three to four weeks," he stated.

The sweep went beyond dangling cables—personnel also dismantled 401 disused utility poles. To speed up the heavy lifting, two skylift trucks were brought on-site to reach the overhead lines.

"We’ve mobilized a 45-strong joint task force combining our yellow personnel and technicians from Apjatel," he emphasized.
