The Jakarta Provincial Government began revitalizing Cut Meutia Mosque in Kebon Sirih Urban Village, Menteng Sub-district, Central Jakarta, on Thursday (10/1), as part of efforts to preserve the historic building.
Revitalization of Cut Meutia Mosque is a priority because of its unique historical value
Jakarta Regional Secretary's Assistant for People's Welfare Ali Maulana Hakim said the revitalization aims to preserve the physical structure of the historic colonial-era building while maintaining its religious function as an inclusive center for Islamic outreach.
"Revitalization of Cut Meutia Mosque is a priority because of its unique historical value, which sets it apart from most other places of worship," Ali said.
Ali noted that the colonial-style building was used as a post office before it was designated as a mosque in 1986.
He said the revitalization therefore requires a special approach to preserve its original structure while incorporating both religious and historical tourism.
He also called on the project contractor to meet the "four right" standards: completing the work on time, maintaining quality, staying within budget, and ensuring the project delivers its intended benefits.
"The physical renovation of the mosque is being carried out by a specialist contractor who understands the characteristics of old buildings to prevent structural damage, such as the building's existing tilt, which has been there from the beginning," he explained.
Ali added that the revitalization of Cut Meutia Mosque is being funded through a creative financing scheme involving corporate social responsibility (CSR) contributions.
"This means the project does not burden the regional budget. We thank the companies whose CSR programs are supporting the revitalization of Cut Meutia Mosque," Ali said.
Ali stressed that after the revitalization, Cut Meutia Mosque will remain an open and welcoming public space for everyone, including non-Muslims, while preserving its role as a place of peace and Islamic outreach.
"The government is responsible for carrying this historical legacy forward to future generations. We must not let this building deteriorate. This revitalization is a collective effort to preserve our historical heritage and safeguard Jakarta's identity," he emphasized.
