The Jakarta Bina Marga Agency moved quickly to fix damaged sections of the Kyai Maja Pedestrian Bridge (JPO), situated beside the South Jakarta Attorney General’s Office.

Suspected late-night vandalism left the bridge stairs stripped of several steel floor plates in an incident believed to have taken place before dawn.

On-site assessments confirmed that 20 steel plates were stolen. In response, the South Jakarta Bina Marga Sub-agency cataloged the damage and mapped out required materials for prompt restoration on Tuesday (9/22).

Jakarta Data and Information Center (Pusdatin) Head, Siti Dinarwenny explained that personnel began replacing the stolen steel plates on Tuesday (9/22) night, aiming to wrap up work by Wednesday (9/23).

To safeguard pedestrians, the Kyai Maja bridge has been temporarily closed while crews carry out the restoration.

"We'll reopen the bridge as soon as the work is fully wrapped up and the structure is certified safe for the public," she expressed, Wednesday (9/23).

The Bina Marga Agency strongly condemned the vandalism, emphasizing that damaging public infrastructure harms residents and disrupts essential services.

"These crossing facilities are built and kept in good shape specifically to protect pedestrians and make daily commutes safer," she stressed.

The agency called on the public to help safeguard shared infrastructure, emphasizing that community cooperation is key to keeping public facilities safe and operational.

"We truly appreciate residents who step up and report damage or safety issues with our public infrastructure," she emphasized.

Before the vandalism, the Kyai Maja brige was in prime shape following a comprehensive overhaul in late 2024. That major renovation saw the complete replacement of its flooring, brand-new roofing, and a fresh coat of paint.
