Jakarta Council (DPRD) Deputy Chair Ima Mahdia has backed plans to use municipal bonds to accelerate the provision of public housing for residents.
We support using municipal bonds
Ima made the statement after chairing a Jakarta Council plenary meeting on Friday (8/21), which included the Jakarta Governor's speech on two draft regional regulations on population control and public housing.
According to her, public housing development is important to meet the need for decent housing, including for people living along riverbanks and on land owned by the Jakarta Provincial Government.
She stressed that decent housing should address not only residents' need for a home, but also their access to supporting facilities such as education.
"That's why we support using municipal bonds. We hope public housing can be developed as soon as possible," Ima said.
She viewed public housing as a solution for moving people living along riverbanks into more suitable homes while helping improve the surrounding areas.
Ima also stressed the importance of providing green open spaces in vertical housing developments. She said future public housing should include open spaces that residents can use as public areas.
The Jakarta Council also has a Special Committee on Accelerating the Handover of Social and Public Facility Assets to push for the faster transfer of such assets to the Jakarta Provincial Government.
"Perhaps in the future, we can work with law enforcement authorities to help return these assets to the Jakarta Provincial Government. This would help us save money because we wouldn't need to purchase land and so on. We could immediately use the land as green open space for the public," she added.
