South Jakarta Mayor Syafrin Liputo and officials from the South Jakarta Water Resources (SDA) Sub-agency inspected three retention basins in Jagakarsa Sub-district that have been completed.
Reduce flooding in several areas that were previously prone to rainwater runoff
The three basins, Pemuda I, Lapangan Merah, and Jagakarsa, collect rainwater runoff to help reduce flooding in nearby residential areas.
According to Syafrin, the retention basins have helped reduce flooding in several areas that were previously prone to rainwater runoff.
"The basins are functioning well as planned. For example, three RWs around Pemuda Retention Basin were previously prone to flooding, but they are no longer affected. Residents around Lapangan Merah Retention Basin have also seen the benefits," he said on Tuesday (8/18).
Syafrin said the retention basins not only help control flooding but also provide various facilities for residents.
"These facilities include a jogging track, children's playground, and shelter," he added.
Syafrin instructed the South Jakarta Water Resources Sub-agency to ensure regular maintenance of the basins, particularly by carrying out routine sediment dredging to maintain their storage capacity.
"These basins must be properly maintained. Sediment dredging is essential to ensure they can hold water at optimal capacity during extreme rainfall and help protect nearby areas from flooding," he said.
Meanwhile, South Jakarta Water Resources Sub-agency Head Santo said construction of all three retention basins had been fully completed.
He noted that the field inspection was part of efforts to monitor water resources infrastructure projects, both completed and still under construction.
"In line with the direction on regular maintenance, we will ensure sediment dredging is carried out routinely so the basins can hold water at maximum capacity when it rains," he said.
