South Jakarta has launched Teman Cerita, a school-based support channel that provides children with a safe space to be heard, receive help, and access professional guidance.

South Jakarta Mayor Syafrin Liputo said protecting children is not solely the government's responsibility, but a shared responsibility among schools, families, and the wider community.

"The principle behind Teman Cerita is to provide a safe place where students can seek help, share their concerns, and receive professional support while maintaining confidentiality. No student should have to face their problems alone," he said on Monday (7/27).

Syafrin urged teachers to serve not only as educators but also as mentors who are sensitive to changes in students' behavior. He also encouraged parents to make time to genuinely listen to their children's concerns.

"I call on all government agencies and our partners to ensure this program is implemented consistently and sustainably, not just today but every week in schools across South Jakarta," he said.

Meanwhile, Jakarta Empowerment, Child Protection, and Population Control (PPAPP) Agency Head Dwi Oktavia explained that Teman Cerita encourages students to build a support network through their peers.

"This means that if a student has a friend who is struggling with personal problems, anxiety, or emotional distress, their peers at school can serve as the first source of support," she added.

According to Dwi, Teman Cerita reflects the government's commitment to ensuring every child feels heard, protected, and supported.

"This initiative is highly strategic because it supports Jakarta's goal of becoming a Child-Friendly City," she said.

Dwi added that the service can also improve adolescents' mental well-being by helping identify and address emotional challenges at an early stage through peer support at school.

"I invite all stakeholders, including government institutions, schools, parents, academics, the business community, the media, and the public, to continue strengthening this collaboration," she said.

She emphasized that protecting children is not solely the government's responsibility but a shared commitment that must be carried out seriously by everyone.

"We hope this initiative becomes a concrete step toward making Jakarta an even more child-friendly, safe, healthy, and inclusive city for every child," she said.
