The Regional Regulation Formation Agency (Bapemperda) of the Jakarta Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD) has completed discussions on the results of the Ministry of Home Affairs' facilitation of the Draft Regional Regulation (Raperda) on the Implementation of the Food System.

One of the important points in the regulation requires food businesses to manage the organic waste they produce.

Chairman of Jakarta DPRD's Bapemperda, Abdul Aziz said joint discussions with regional apparatus were conducted to inventory all input from the Ministry of Home Affairs and adjust it to the results of the discussion of the Draft Regional Regulation.

"We inventory all the proposed changes, then adjust them according to the results of the discussions that have taken place," he said, Thursday (7/23).

According to him, several substantive inputs were accommodated to refine the draft regional regulation. In addition to refining the substance of the draft, the Bapemperda also clarified regulations regarding food waste management in an effort to reduce the volume of organic waste in the capital.

Aziz assessed that the waste emergency faced by Jakarta requires clear regulations to ensure that food businesses are responsible for managing the waste they produce.

"Through this draft regional regulation, food businesses must be able to process their own waste. However, they can also collaborate with communities or environmental managers who already have waste processing facilities," he added.

He hopes that this regulation will be able to reduce the accumulation of organic waste, which has been one of the main problems in Jakarta.

Aziz stated that markets, restaurants, hotels, and various culinary businesses are the largest contributors to organic waste. Therefore, the Draft Regional Regulation stipulates that organic waste management is the responsibility of every business that produces such waste.

"The hope is that the burden of waste management will no longer be entirely borne by the community or the Jakarta Provincial Government, but will also become the responsibility of the business actors who produce it," he stated.
