Family Welfare Movement Teams (TP PKK) members from Meruya Selatan Urban Village and Kembangan Sub-district harvested 25 kilograms of golden melons from the urban farm at RPTRA Manuver on Jalan Perumahan Unilever Kembangan, RT 01/RW 09, Meruya Selatan Urban Village.
Growing golden melons offers many benefits
Kembangan Sub-district TP PKK Chair Meidina Puspita Sari said golden melon and honey pumpkin are West Jakarta's signature crops. She said cultivating golden melons is part of efforts to preserve these iconic crops, which have strong economic potential.
"Growing golden melons offers many benefits for household food security. We hope this initiative can be replicated at other RPTRAs," she said on Friday (7/17).
Besides functioning as a cultivation site, Meidina hopes the urban farm at RPTRA will become an educational space for residents, young children, and the wider community. She said visitors can learn about urban farming, including cultivation techniques and how to properly care for golden melons, while being encouraged to make use of limited space at home and in their neighborhoods to grow food.
"By learning how to cultivate golden melons, residents can apply these methods in their own homes," she said.
Meruya Selatan Urban Village Head M. Maizar added that golden melons have been cultivated at RPTRA Manuver for years, even before the West Jakarta administration introduced its iconic crop cultivation program. He said golden melons are one of the area's urban farming products with strong economic value.
"We hope not only TP PKK members but also residents will be encouraged to expand urban farming at home and in their neighborhoods by growing golden melons," he said.
