A fire, suspected to have been triggered by a leaking gas stove regulator, gutted five rented houses on Jalan Kayu Tinggi, Cakung Timur, East Jakarta, Friday (7/17).

East Jakarta Fire and Rescue Sub-agency's Operation Section Head, Abdul Wahid stated that the fire was reported at 10:12 PM.

"We immediately dispatched 13 fire trucks and 65 personnel to the scene," he expressed, Friday (7/17).

Firefighters reached the site at 10:21 PM, working rapidly to contain the growing blaze.

"The fire was fully put out by 11:58 PM. Unfortunately, the damage to the five rental units has left 12 people from eight families homeless," he explained.

Cakung Sub-district Vice Head, Sigit Darmanto added that the survivors have been evacuated to Musala An Nur, located near the site of the fire.

"We have requested basic relief supplies from the Social Sub-agency, the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), and East Jakarta Baznas Bazis to ensure they are distributed as soon as possible," he noted.

He appreciated the firefighters' swift response in successfully containing the fire, preventing it from spreading to neighboring buildings.

"Tragically, an elderly resident passed away during the incident, suspectedly due to a heart attack," he concluded.
