The Tanah Tinggi Urban Village, Johar Baru, Central Jakarta, is actively promoting the waste sorting program in the densely populated residential area of RT 15/RW 08.

Head of Tanah Tinggi Urban Village, Heru Tri Prasetyo said socialization was carried out door to door to residents' homes with RT and RW administrators and local youth groups.

Independently sorted their waste

According to Heru, a waste bank has also been set up at the location to collect used plastic mineral water bottles from residents and boarding house residents.

Meanwhile, organic waste from food scraps that has been sorted from residents' homes is collected to be processed as maggot cultivation feed and liquid and solid compost fertilizer.

"Around 50 to 60 percent of the densely populated houses in RT 15/RW 08 have independently sorted their waste," he said, Wednesday (7/15).

Heru added the RT administrators also routinely check the sorting bins in each house to ensure that inorganic and organic waste are not mixed.

Farid Pahlevi, Head of RT 15/RW 08 Tanah Tinggi, explained that his officers have provided trash cans made from used paint cans, distributed throughout several alleys, to make it easier for residents to dispose of organic waste. They have also provided large containers for collecting plastic water bottles, especially for boarding house residents.

"We also routinely encourage local residents to bring used mineral water bottles to the designated collection containers. Food scraps can be disposed of in several trash cans," he explained.

According to him, the proceeds from the sale of used mineral water bottles are collected every week and used for the common good.

"We are optimistic that public awareness will continue to increase along with gradual changes in behavior regarding waste management in the environment," he hoped.
