Jakarta’s free museum program for its 499th Anniversary was met with overwhelming enthusiasm.

Over just three days, a staggering 29,189 visitors flocked to the four museums overseen by the Jakarta History Museum Management Unit, proving just how much the public values the city's heritage.

It is heartening to see our museums bustling with families and youth

The program, directed by Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung, took place at the Jakarta History Museum, Prasasti Museum, MH Thamrin Museum, and Joang '45 Museum.

According to official data on Monday (6/22)—coinciding with Jakarta’s 499th Anniversary—visitor numbers reached 1,484. This figure then surged significantly over the weekend, recording 12,422 visitors on Saturday, June 27, and rising further to 15,263 on Sunday (6/28).

The Jakarta History Museum stole the spotlight as the top-visited landmark, drawing 12,078 visitors on Saturday and 14,983 on Sunday. These record-breaking figures are the highest since 2020. This milestone also marks the first time since the pandemic that the museum’s daily attendance has smashed the 10,000-visitor threshold.

Jakarta History Museum Head, Retno Ayati praised the massive turnout for the free entry program. This policy serves as a tribute to the residents while making the city's history more accessible and engaging for the younger generation.

"It is heartening to see our museums bustling with families and youth keen to explore the legacy of Jakarta’s struggle and its remarkable evolution over the past 499 years,” she remarked, Tuesday (6/30).

Jakarta Culture Agency Head, Mochamad Miftahulloh Tamary believes the massive turnout is a clear sign that the desire to safeguard and cherish the city's heritage is on the rise.

"This incredible response proves our cultural legacy is closer to people's hearts than ever. Thank you for joining us in nurturing our history and reinforcing Jakarta's identity by visiting its museums," he remarked.

He stressed the ongoing mission to make museums inclusive and innovative public spaces that welcome all residents.

This achievement drives the museum unit to keep boosting its service quality and interactivity. By creating a more inviting atmosphere, Jakarta aims to position its museums as top-tier educational and cultural hubs for the community and visitors alike.
