Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung inspected the organic waste processing system at Kramat Jati Market, East Jakarta, Monday (5/11).

This organic waste management initiative is a concrete step by the Jakarta government to implement Governor's Instruction No. 5/2026 regarding waste sorting in Jakarta.

"Today serves as a follow-up to the waste sorting program we recently launched. The Jakarta government, through Pasar Jaya, will collaborate with community groups concerned with waste management, specifically for both organic and inorganic waste," he expressd.

He emphasized that collaboration between Pasar Jaya, the community, and the private sector is the primary key to managing the massive volume of waste that has long burdened the Bantargebang Landfill.

The waste processing system at Kramat Jati Market is designed to manage approximately five tons of waste daily. In synergy with the private sector and Pupuk Indonesia, the processed waste will be utilized for landscaping and converted into products with functional value.

Pasar Jaya currently manages 153 markets, which generate about 500 tons of waste that are typically sent to the Bantargebang Landfill. Through this initiative, he expressed confidence that the waste shipment load to Bantargebang will begin to decrease.

"I am convinced that if this program is executed effectively, it will be highly beneficial in reducing the burden of transporting waste from markets to Bantargebang," he explained.

Besides markets across Jakarta, similar waste processing systems will be implemented in the hotel, restaurant, and cafe (Horeca) sectors, which also contribute significantly to the waste volume at the Bantargebang landfill.

"Hopefully, this will run smoothly and solve waste issues while promoting a greener environment, as organic waste can be repurposed into fertilizer," he added.

Pramono asserted that this waste-sorting movement will be implemented massively across Jakarta. He has instructed mayors, sub-district heads, urban village heads, down to the neighborhood levels (RT/RW) to begin implementing these efforts.

The Jakarta government, he added, will gradually prepare the necessary waste management facilities and infrastructure for the citizens.

"We will gradually prepare the infrastructure. However, the most important thing is that this must be sustainable and consistent, as this is what will ultimately change the face of Jakarta," he concluded.
