West Jakarta City Administration plans to build a drainage channel from Jalan Outer Ring Road to Angke River to address flooding at the JORR W2 Kembangan Toll underpass intersection. Construction of the approximately 1,050-meter channel is set to begin in June.

Construction is expected to take about four months

West Jakarta Mayor Iin Mutmainah said she inspected RT 01/01 in Kembangan Urban Village, which was affected by flooding, on Tuesday (5/5) evening. She said flooding in the residential area and at the JORR W2 Kembangan Toll underpass intersection was triggered by overflow from Angke River.

"One solution is to build a 1,050-meter drainage channel leading to Angke River," she highlighted.

Iin said the new channel will direct water back to the Angke River to address flooding, with the project financed through a scheme involving private sector support.

Funding will be shared between the Jakarta Provincial Government and three companies as part of developer obligations. While construction has not yet begun, water pumping is being used as a temporary measure.

"The project is being processed. Construction is expected to take about four months," she added.

Acting Head of the West Jakarta Water Resources Sub-agency, Mustajab, said flooding at the JORR W2 Kembangan Toll underpass intersection was caused by overflow from two connecting channels (Phb), namely Phb Tunas Muda and Phb Pasar Minggu, which serve as inlets to Angke River.

As water levels in the Angke River remain high, flow in both phb channels has reversed and overflowed, and the planned drainage channel will carry water directly to the river.

Mustajab added that a sluice gate equipped with pumps has been built at the downstream end of the channel to discharge water into Angke River when the water levels are high.

"We are currently processing the required documents. Hopefully, construction can begin within a month at the latest," he added.
