North Jakarta’s Kelapa Gading Water Resources (SDA) task force is building a stilling basin on Jalan Gading Nirwana, RW 23, Pegangsaan Dua Urban Village. The work is slated to be finished by May 2026.
Kelapa Gading Sub-district SDA Executing Unit Head, Supiyan said, the project follows up on residents' concerns about the need for better flood prevention.
To prevent frequent flooding during heavy rainfall
"Besides responding to the public's request, this work also aims to prevent frequent flooding during heavy rainfall," he expressed, Tuesday (4/21).
Supiyan explained that the basin measures 3.4 meters in length, 2 meters in width, and 3 meters in height.
"The work began in early April 2026 and is targeted for completion by the end of May," he explained.
He mentioned that two basins would be built at the front and back of the neighborhood.
"We've deployed nine workers and a portable pump is on standby to keep water flowing into the river channel during the work," he explained.
He added that the primary digging was performed with a wheel excavator, followed by manual labor to guarantee accuracy in the construction.
"The basin is expected to accommodate up to 150 cubic meters of water," he noted.
Meanwhile, a local security officer, Urip (42), stated that the RW 23 area—which comprises eight neighborhood units (RT)—typically experiences flooding ranging from 20 to 30 centimeters during high-intensity rainfall, significantly disrupting residents' activities.
"Flooding occurs frequently because the area is situated in a basin. Further, the surrounding roads have been elevated, causing water to easily flow into the residential area," he added.
He hopes the basin will solve the local flooding issues.
"Hopefully, this will significantly cut down on flooding, and residents won't have to worry anymore during heavy rain," he stated.
