The Jakarta Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) is strengthening mitigation measures to prevent social vulnerabilities such as thuggery and extortion in various areas of the capital. This effort follows a surge in extortion cases that went viral in the Tanah Abang area, triggering public concerns about security in public spaces.

In general, Jakarta's security level is still considered good, although incidents in the field remain a concern.

According to the Global Residence Index 2026 report, Jakarta ranks second as the safest city in Southeast Asia with a score of 0.72, behind Singapore. This achievement presents a challenge for local governments to maintain consistent security.

Head of Jakarta Satpol PP, Satriadi Gunawan said his team continues to improve its rapid response to every report of disturbances. According to him, speed of response is key to creating a sense of security and providing a deterrent effect on perpetrators.

"Every time an incident goes viral, we immediately cooperate with the police, and the perpetrator is quickly arrested," he said, Thursday (4/16).

He added that the potential for vulnerabilities such as thuggery and extortion is inseparable from the dynamics of large cities with high economic activity. Areas like Tanah Abang, which serve as centers of commerce, often present opportunities for certain individuals to commit violations.

"Similar conditions also have the potential to arise in other areas if not anticipated," he added.

The agency is implementing mitigation measures across the city. One of the effort is widespread public awareness campaigns, using loudspeakers to remind the public about the prohibition on illegal parking, illegal activities, and the potential for extortion that can arise from disorder.

"Enforcement of illegal parking is also being intensified. Disturbance in public spaces often creates a loophole for extortion. Therefore, spatial planning and public discipline are crucial in prevention efforts," he continued.

Satriadi stated that cross-agency coordination has also been strengthened, involving the Transportation Agency, the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the Indonesian National Police (Polri), and local governments. Satpol PP will even hold communication forums, such as coffee mornings, with community leaders, urban village heads, and district heads to build synergy in maintaining environmental security.

The use of technology, such as the installation and optimization of CCTV, is also a focus. Satpol PP is encouraging the dissemination of information to the public that their area is under surveillance.

This step is believed to be able to prevent the perpetrators' intentions of crime and speed up the process of taking action if a violation occurs.

"With a combination of enforcement, prevention, and collaboration, the government is optimistic that Jakarta's security can continue to be maintained," he stated.
