Jakarta authorities responded swiftly to a landslide at Zone 4A of the Bantargebang Landfill on Sunday (3/8) noon.

Governor Pramono Anung confirmed that the city will ensure all victims—including fatalities and those injured—receive full medical care and proper compensation.

"The family of the deceased city environmental worker will receive social security benefits, while the Jakarta government will fully cover all medical expenses for the injured," he stated, at City Hall, Monday (3/9).

Pramono extended his deepest condolences following the tragedy, which he attributed to extreme weather conditions. Local stations recorded a staggering 264 mm of rainfall in a single day—a deluge that officials say triggered the collapse.

The landslide claimed four lives and left five others injured. Besides the human toll, the debris buried a 40-meter stretch of the facility’s operational road and obstructed the Ciketing River.

"On behalf of the Jakarta government, we extend our deepest condolences to the families of the four individuals who lost their lives in the waste landslide at Zone 4A of the Bantargebang Landfill,” he stated.

In the wake of the tragedy, the Jakarta Environmental Agency immediately launched an emergency response operation. They are prioritizing site safety for personnel and providing aid to the victims while working to stabilize the area.

The response features a massive multi-agency effort, bringing together personnel from National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS), Polda Metro Jaya, and Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI). To facilitate the recovery process, a fleet of 19 heavy excavators and seven ambulances has been deployed to the site.

As a precautionary measure, Pramono announced that operations at Zone 4A have been temporarily closed. Inbound waste shipments to the Bantargebang facility will be scaled back, with all primary services rerouted to Zone 3.
