Jakarta City Council Chairman, Khoirudin noted that the first year under Governor Pramono Anung and Vice Governor Rano Karno has served as a crucial consolidation phase, while charting the course for Jakarta’s development following its transformation into a Global City.
He gave a thumbs up to several key initiatives, particularly the beefing up of flood mitigation through river normalization, reservoir optimization, and staying in sync with the central government on regional coordination.
Jakarta will go from strength to strength on the global stage
In the transportation sector, expanding Transjabodetabek services and greasing the wheels of intermodal integration were highlighted as strategic moves to cut through congestion and encourage a shift toward public transit.
"In social and education sectors, the free private school program and the bolstered KJP Plus show that the government is leveling the playing field for the vulnerable. The aggressive stunting reduction drive and a more responsive healthcare referral system also hit a high note,” he expressed, Friday (2/20).
Further, Khoirudin laid out several constructive takeaways in his capacity as a partner in overseeing the city’s performance and budgeting.
First, he emphasized that flood mitigation must be integrated from start to finish, requiring the city to be on the same page with satellite regions while tightening the screws on spatial management.
Second, he noted that expanding public transit is not enough; the city must step up its game in service quality—ensuring comfort, punctuality, and affordability—so it truly becomes the go-to choice for the public.
Third, he warned that the free private school and KJP Plus initiatives must hit the bullseye in their targeting, ensuring they remain transparent and maintain long-term fiscal health.
Fourth, the drive to slash stunting rates must stay the course through a ground-up approach, focusing on family-centric education and critical interventions during the vital window of the first 1,000 days of life.
Overall, he noted that Jakarta’s policy direction is on the right track, though he stressed that the focus must remain on ensuring the rubber hits the road through precise implementation.
“We act not as an opposition, but as a strategic partner to ensure the city budget delivers the best bang for the buck for all Jakartans,” he emphasized.
In the future, Khoirudin urged for a future-proof Jakarta—one that is more inclusive and resilient in tackling modern urban challenges, from climate change and population density to bridging social gaps.
“Insya Allah (God willing), with solid synergy between the executive and legislative branches, along with public support, Jakarta will go from strength to strength on the global stage while ensuring it leaves no one behind,” he concluded.
