Jakarta Vice Governor Rano Karno confirmed that the Jakarta government has taken decisive action following a viral social media report involving illegal parking attendants committing extortion in Tanah Abang.
The crackdown was a joint operation involving the Public Order Agency (Satpol PP)—including its specialized tourism unit—the National Police, and the Indonesian Military (TNI).
The issue with these parking attendants has been handled
"Satpol PP, the police, and our colleagues from the TNI have already intervened. Our specialized tourism unit has also been deployed to the ground," he stated, Wednesday (2/18).
Rano noted that such incidents often stem from opportunistic individuals looking for illicit profits ahead of specific seasonal moments. In response, authorities have apprehended the perpetrators and placed them under disciplinary guidance.
He emphasized a zero-tolerance policy for rule violations, particularly given that the extortion involved significant amounts and caused widespread public concern.
To prevent a recurrence, he has ordered increased surveillance in the area to ensure Tanah Abang remains safe, orderly, and convenient for visitors.
"The issue with these parking attendants has been handled. I am confident that within the next two or three days, the area will be much more orderly," he concluded.
