The uncompleted dredging of Sunter River, affected to the residents in RT 15/RW 7, Jatinegara Urban Village, Pulogadung Sub-District, East Jakarta, prone to flooding. Residents hoped the dredging could free the area from flood inundation.
Taufik (46), a local resident said that if few hours of heavy rains, the water will immediately flood the houses surrounding the river. Besides inundating houses, the water also made 3 graves in Pangeran Jayakarta cemetery complex eroded.
"The river is shallow. It was dredged in 1992, but the dredging was not completed. Finally, the three graves collapsed since the soil continuously eroded. Residents hoped that the dredging can be finished immediately, so that there is no flood again," he said, Thursday (3/27).
Related to that, Head of Infrastructure Section Sub-Department of East Jakarta Public Works Water Management, Supriyatno admitted that there is already dredging program for all troubled rivers in East Jakarta in 2014. He also promised to check the locations to find the main problem.
"The officers will directly check into the field. If it is possible, then the troubled river will immediately be dredged," he promised.
However, Head of East Jakarta Water Management Public Works, Jatiwaluyo, argued that if the normalization and dredging program is not his responsibility, but the agency in the province.
"I do not know much about the details, please coordinate it to the Department of Public Works at the provincial level," he completed.
