The Jakarta Tourism and Culture Department (Disparbud) to hold Pecinan Batavia 2019 event at Fatahillah Park, Kota Tua, West Jakarta on Saturday (11/16).

" We present this event for public thus they can gain knowledge about Chinese culture and art"

Jakarta Disparbud Acting Head (Plt), Alberto Ali stated, this event will show directly the harmonious diversity and collaboration between Chinese and Betawi culture.

"Jakarta is known as the melting point of various cultures. One of them is Chinese culture, including Pecinan (China Town) that gives a different nuance to Jakarta," he conveyed, Friday (11/15).

According to him, Pecinan Batavia 2019 is one of city's efforts to preserve cultural diversity in Jakarta, including Chinese culture.

"We present this event for public thus they can gain knowledge about Chinese cultures and arts," he added.

Through this event, his side wants to illustrate various cultures in one location. Besides, visitors can know further about Chinese ethnic assimilation to the life of Betawi tribe in Jakarta who have coexisted and united for decades.

Pecinan Batavia 2019 will be enlivened with colossal drama, barongsai, gambang kromong, plate spinning, gasing communities, and gambus.

"Visitors also able to enjoy the view of Chinese-style architectures in old buildings, markets, shops and stalls in Pecinan or try Jakarta and Chinese dishes in our food stalls," he said.

Pecinan or China Town is an area that usually exists in many cities and is a trade center that is inhabited by many ethnic Chinese.

"West Jakarta is very closely with history and culture of China since decades ago," he mentioned.

Meanwhile, an artist who preserves Topeng Betawi dance, Atien Kisam added, her side will perform in colossal drama with title of "Nilai Tradisi Sejarah Pecinan Batavia 2019" or (Historical Value of Batavia China Town 2019) will tell a story of daily life of ethnic Chinese community in Batavia.

"There are 150 artists who will participate in this performance. Through this play, we can learn that in old time, people fought for one goal namely, Indonesia," she asserted.
